surnoms : The Straight Edge Hardcore, The Straight Edge Superstar et The Kid of Chicago
ses débuts : CM Punk débutait le catch dans une petite fédération de backyard wrestling appelée Lunatic Wrestling Federation sous le nom de Chris Magnets dans les années 1990.
Il entra ensuite dans l'école de catch "Steel Domain" à Chicago, où il fut entraîné par Ace Steel, Danny Dominion et Kevin Quinn.
C'est d'ailleurs dans cette école de lutte qu'il rencontra Scott Colton, mieux connu sous le nom de Colt Cabana. Punk et Cabana devinrent amis et catchèrent ensemble dans les mêmes fédérations indépendantes, en tant qu'adversaires ou en tant qu'alliés. Lui, ainsi que Colt Cabana, les frères Smoothe, et le manager Dave Prazak formèrent la Gold Blond Mafia.
La première véritable fédération de CM Punk est considérée comme la Independent Wrestling Association: Mid-South, où il remporta le IWA Mid-South Light-Heavyweight Championship deux fois et le IWA Mid-South Heavyweight Championship à cinq reprises.
